Clinical studies are conducted in the form of clerkships for small groups of students. Students begin their clinical clerkships at the end of the second and for the entire third and fourth years of study. The main emphasis is on clinical bedside teaching and tutoring in affiliated teaching departments of hospitals, out-patient clinics and primary care clinics.

Students receive narrative and formative assessments.

Students:

  1. come into close contact with patients
  2. participate in clinical rounds and decision-making processes
  3. acquire the skills of history taking and physical diagnosis under supervision of the teaching staff
  4. are exposed to the subspecialties and ancillary diagnostic procedures carried out in laboratories and imaging facilities

Division chairmen allocate teaching departments for the academic year, and student groups are assigned to those departments.

Following are the core Third Year clerkships:

  1. Psychiatry
    5 weeks
  2. Internal Medicine
    13 weeks
  3. Emergency Medicine
    2 weeks
  4. Pediatrics
    8 weeks
  5. Surgery
    8 weeks
  6. Obstetrics and Gynecology
    6 weeks

ASM (Art & Science of Medicine) is taught throughout the first three years of medical school. The course combines discussion on topics such as professionalism, patient engagement and communication skills, and history taking. The focus during the third year is on advanced patient-centered interviewing skills, ethics, and Professional Identity Formation topics.

At the end of this year, students take the USMLE Step 2 examinations.

Fourth Year Curriculum

The year 4 curriculum is comprised of:

  • 16 weeks of electives and Subinternships in the USA
  • Core Rotations which MUST be completed in Israel:
    • Neurology
      4 weeks
    • Family Medicine
      4 weeks
    • Radiology
      1 week
  • 5 weeks of Israeli electives at Tel Aviv University affiliated hospitals.

Students must successfully pass all USMLE examinations to be eligible for graduation.
